Settlement Processes

In seeking redress for Crown breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori can choose to:

  • Have their claims heard through Waitangi Tribunal process, or
  • Enter settlement negotiations with the Crown.

Where claims involve, or could involve, Crown forest licensed land, the Trust can assist Māori claimants to prepare, present and negotiate claims.

The Trust's funding priorities are based on the anticipated work programme of Waitangi Tribunal, the Office of Treaty Settlements and also the Trust's own assessment of the readiness of claimants.
