Nothing to Fear in Forestry Settlements

Crown Forestry Rental Trust (CFRT) is confident that Māori and forestry companies will form lasting and secure relationships as a result of Treaty settlements involving forestry land.

Speaking in response to reports of Treaty claims harming New Zealand’s forestry industry, CFRT Chairman, Sir Graham Latimer supported Carter Holt Harvey’s view that Māori and Forestry Companies could work together for mutual benefit.

Sir Graham believes forestry is a fundamental part of New Zealand’s economic future and that settling claims over forestry lands will assist its development.

“There is nothing for forestry companies to fear in Treaty settlements involving forestry land.” Sir Graham said “Treaty settlements over Crown forest land are good for New Zealand. Forestry companies can be sure of who they are dealing with in the long term. Business depends on maintaining good relationships.”

“Māori have always understood the value of strong and trusting relationships in business. Māori would not do anything to impede development.” He continued, “Quite the contrary, it is in our interest to make business relationships work long term.”

Sir Graham notes that the perceived uncertainty creates negative and unfounded connotations. “It is unfortunate to suggest that Māori might attempt to extort forestry companies in some way. The fact is Māori have always assisted the Government in its efforts to develop forestry for the benefit of all New Zealand.”

Sir Graham is mindful of the concerns of forestry companies and supports Juken Nissho’s call for the Government to get it right. “Forestry companies need to be reassured that their ownership rights will be protected. The Crown Forestry Rental Trust is confident that Government will get it right.”
